In differentiated elementary classrooms it is important to have varied, meaningful, activities that will allow all learners to reach the same goal. Teachers should be sure to include students in creating and reviewing rules and guidelines at the beginning of the year to establish a positive classroom climate. Students also need to be knowledgeable of procedures for all small group activities and be given a clear plan for what to do when they are struggling. Early finishers and non-readers’ needs have to be considered as well. As students practice these methods they will learn to become more independent and feel as though their education is individualized and more meaningful to them.
